The Importance of Post-Root Canal Care: 4 Tips for Optimal Healing

Root canal treatment is a common dental procedure. It is carried out to preserve the longevity and function of a tooth by removing infected pulpal tissue. Following the removal, canals are cleaned, shaped and irrigated before being filled and sealed with gutta-percha. Finally, the root canal treatment is complete when the dentist removes the temporary filling and restores the tooth with a dental crown or permanent filling for protection. After undergoing a root canal procedure, it is crucial to take proper care of the tooth to ensure optimal healing and prevent any complications. Failure to follow the recommended post-treatment care can result in discomfort and even the need for additional dental procedures.

1. Eat soft food

Your tooth may become weaker after root canal therapy. It is important to avoid hard, crunchy and sticky food such as apples, nuts, ice or chewing gum, especially when you have a temporary crown or filling. These foods can dislodge the temporary restorations and expose the decontaminated canals. Also, try to eat soft foods like porridge, soup and mashed potatoes following a root canal procedure until the root treated tooth is fully restored in order to avoid damage. It is best if the food is lukewarm to prevent sensitivity.

2. Maintain brushing and flossing habits

Maintaining optimum oral hygiene habits is essential even after the tooth has become non-vital after the root canal treatment. Brush and floss daily and keep your oral cavity clean to avoid the risk of recurrence. Additionally, avoid putting too much pressure on your teeth when brushing as it might damage the temporary filling or crown that protects the tooth. A root canal’s ensuing discomfort usually subsides within a few days. If you experience any persistent pain or discomfort, you should revisit your dentist immediately. It is advisable to visit your dentist regularly for a follow-up session even if you are pain-free.

3. Be extra cautious when chewing food

After your root canal procedure, you can eat once the anaesthetic numbness wears off, but if possible, chew on the opposite side of your mouth to reduce irritation on the treated tooth. Unrestored teeth are also more susceptible to fracturing. In serious cases, you may need to return for more cleaning sessions until the discomfort subsides. You should maintain this eating habit until your tooth is fully restored.
